Introducing the Dulux Colour of the Year 2022

2 years ago by

For the 19th consecutive year, Dulux assembled a group of international design experts to decide on a colour that reflects the mood of the moment. The panel made their decision at a virtual summit, as opposed to the Global Aesthetics Centre – a first in the group’s history.

The trend experts chose Bright Skies as their Colour of the Year 2022. They describe their choice as ‘a light, airy and optimistic blue that’s good for the soul’, and one which ‘promises to open up and revitalise your home’.

The Creative Director of Dulux UK, Marianne Shillingford, explained: ‘Right now, people want to feel revitalised and enjoy the freedoms that are returning to them, to look out and bring in new ideas. What better inspiration can we take than the endless skies around us?’

But what does the wider design community have to say about this year’s Dulux colour? Let’s review the reaction to this cool shade.

Interior Experts react to the Dulux Colour of the Year 2022

The decision to opt for a light blue colour marked an interesting departure from the subtle green hues that dominated the decorating scene for much of 2021. Dulux’s choice received a broadly positive response, with many interior design experts praising its versatility and the hope for the future that it represents.

German-born textile designer, Eva Sonaike, described it as a light, easy colour to work with, and one that can be easily combined with other colours to make a powerful statement, whilst Busola Evans, associate editor of Livingetc, went so far as to call it the ‘gentle design palette cleanser that many of us need after a challenging 18 months’.

What colours work well with Bright Skies?

Bright Skies is supported by four colour palettes – Workshop, Greenhouse, Studio and Salon – that have been introduced by Dulux, who hope that it will inspire and facilitate decorating projects in every kind of room:

  • The Workshop palette ‘allows people to create adaptable spaces’ – creating a home office, for example. Dulux describes them as ‘light and positive colours that make the functional fun”
  • Greenhouse offers a range of fresh greens and blues that are the perfect backdrop for plants and natural materials, such as bark or cork
  • The Studio palette is described as ‘subtle and inspiring’. It seeks to soothe with a mixture of pale pinks, reds and oranges.
  • Salon is intended to be ‘an enabler of fresh ideas and creative thinking’. It is consciously pale and soft and designed for those who want a room, or a home, that is ready for anything.
